Bloggers Embark: USS Nimitz Plans To Receive 16 Podcasters, Bloggers and Others for May 29-30, 2009
On May 29th, 2009 a group of bloggers including Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble, and Charlene Li (in addition to me) will be flying via a navy plane to the USS Nimitz. The ship holds 5,000 people and will be out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Bloggers and I will join the crew and captain for 20 hours of “ship bonding”. Why is the Navy doing this? I asked Dennis Hall, the group’s organizer and volunteer who nominates civilians to the Public Affairs Officers of the 7 military services. They are doing it to have the Navy get better “word of mouth” marketing among the world. Dennis also explains the entire trip to the Marketing Voices audience which will include a fast stop of the airplane as it lands and moves from 140 mph to 0 mph in just one second. Dennis says the people’s bodies on the plane will feel like a pufferfish.

As unique an opportunity this will be for you and the other bloggers, you have to consider that your presence will, in my opinion, indicate support for the Navy’s use of white
phosphorus and the Navy Warfare Testing Program which will, and I’m quoting the Navy press release,
“…utilize mid- and high frequency active sonar sources and explosive detonations. These sonar and explosive sources will be utilized during Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) Tracking Exercises, Mine Avoidance Training, Extended Echo Ranging and Improved Extended Echo Ranging (EER/IEER) events, Missile Exercises, Gunnery Exercises, Bombing Exercises, Sinking Exercises, and Mine Warfare Training…”
The impact on marine mammals is potentially deadly, whales and dolphins beaching themselves to get away from the sound, their medium of communication.
I am not anti military, but please consider what your presence on board the Nimitz ultimately represents.
“…
Mass stranding and mortality events associated with mid-frequency sonar exercises have occurred, among other places, in North Carolina (2005); Haro Strait off the coast of Washington State (2003); the Canary Islands (2004, 2002, 1989, 1986, 1985); Madeira (2000); the U.S. Virgin Islands (1999, 1998); and in Greece (1996). One of the best documented incidents occurred in the Bahamas in 2000 when 16 whales of three species stranded along 150 miles of shoreline as ships blasted the area with sonar.
The U.S. Navy later acknowledged in an official report that its use of sonar was the likely cause of the stranding…”

Jennifer,
Happy Birthday! I’m very impressed that the Captain of the USS Nimitz remembered your big day. ;~) Have a great adventure at sea and don’t let the grab and launch G-forces upset your balance. We all look forward to your blog reports. Alan
